Maek-ju han-pyong – beer-one-bottle

A bit of a world tour, a bit of self-discovery
   
Saarbrücken, February 13th 2007 – In May 1999 the Englishman Gareth Bartley, a translator and author, got on his bike to go and visit a few friends. By the time he returned in February 2001 he had covered some 16,800 miles by bike and some 60,000 in all, seen 6 continents and 20 countries, and circumnavigated the globe while doing so, using only the bicycle and a handful of freight vessels.

In 'Maek-ju han-pyong', recently published by the author himself, he narrates his experiences and insights into other cultures, many of which were only able to be gained thanks to the special nature of this journey, but also tells of unexpected encounters with his alter ego. His painstaking recording of what happened during the journey, hundreds of notes sent home in epistolary form and 214 hours of tape recordings, have contributed to a work which will take the well-disposed reader off on a very interesting, entertaining journey into the unknown.

By peppering his work with more than a little of that laconic British humour, the author succeeds not only in whisking his readers away, almost en passant, into another world, but also in gaining some surprising insights into the nature of Man himself. He has the courage to question his own existence, to probe the origins and destination of the individual and thus the meaning of life in a way that is nothing short of casual and comes, surprisingly – at least as far as he himself is concerned – to one or two answers.
