Let's honour the modern father

catapa's picture

Submitted by catapa on Mon, 2010-06-07 16:23.

Cambridge. 7 June 2010. - The modern day father comes in various forms. Today’s father is no longer always the traditional, married breadwinner and disciplinarian in the family. He may leave the house to go to work or work from home, he can be single or married; gay or straight; a biological, adoptive or step-parent; and a more than capable caregiver to children facing the physical or psychological challenges of growing up.

Well into the nineteenth century, fathers’ roles were primarily to serve as breadwinners and the conveyers of moral values and religious education to their offspring. However, with the advent of industrialization and urbanization and as factories emerged as major sources of employment, several generations of fathers became distanced from the household and their families.

Family patterns in the post-industrial society are changing again. With a large proportion of mothers leaving home -many providing household income- the arrival of the Internet and distant working opportunities, many modern fathers' roles involve them much more in the home.

Father's Day photo gifts When celebrating fatherhood, it is time to remember that like any other member of the family, fathers too have their own interests and lives.  Despite the changes in the male role, the contemporary debate recognizes men commonly as being competitive and with a greater need to ream. Even many modern fathers follow sport events in a group of friends. What could the loving football fan enjoy more than his own 'World Cup ware'?

A sport bottle personalised with own photographs and texts for the gym or a bike ride or a traditional one pint beer mug with image onprint are presents for Dads with a difference. Creating a unique supporter shirt, caps or a bbq apron for a World-Cup-Party at home is fun. For the bread winner who leaves to his office a crystal pen holder block with a laser engraved photograph will avoid having to leave the family totally back home.

The ideal modern father is the one who parents from his heart and models respect towards his children’s mother, who wears an apron too and can be seen using a mop, a washing machine, or any home appliance that was taboo in past generations, one who thinks his responsibility as a father is more than bread-winning and disciplining, one who cares not just for the physical needs but bonds with his children and supports their emotional needs.

Bishop Valentine of Terni is a martyred Saint of ancient Rome. Because of his believes he was executed on 14 February 269. Bishop Valentine married couples and aided Christians which Emperor Claudius II considered a crime. According to legend Valentine gave the newly wedded couples flowers from his own garden. A modern Valentine present for a friend or partner requires a personal touch, that purchased flowers can hardly provide.

From a snapshot to printed art on the wall

Canvas printing is popular for a family portrait from a professional photographer or a wedding picture. But any well achieved photograph in sufficient resolution could decorate an office or home. A framed poster or canvas print from a photograph is in any case more personal than a poster from a furniture store. A few years ago, during a visit to a well know Swedish furniture chain, I noticed that most of the posters on the shelf had already been there in my own youth. This popular chain charges about £30 for a framed print. Own photographs printed onto a canvas cost about twice as much, but are infinitely more individual than posters from stock and they preserve personal memories.

Instead of standard decoration for our teenager's room we printed a photograph from her skiing holidays which she chose, onto a large canvas. The print was so good and popular, that many more poster and canvas prints have followed since. It doesn't really matter if a poster print from an artist makes a higher cultural claim. Own photographs reflect the photographers impressions, and thanks to digital technology, these can be reproduced, just like when telling a story through pictures instead of words. Most people with digital images from holidays, parties or family pics have such images which should be on display.

Should a Christmas present be practical, useful or personal? The search for the perfect gift idea continues.

When well being and friendship become more important than material goods, then the way presents are selected changes, too. Ann Green has put together a list of Christmas gifts available online. The gift ideas range from the decorative, the practical to family friendly games. They all have in common, that they can be personalised with own images.

Berlin, London, Cambridge. 6 Nov. 2009. Finding the right Christmas present for your friends and family is a challenge you have to face every year. When a few basic rules are observed, finding original and affordable presents can become quite easy. Last minute purchases should be avoided, it only causes stress at the wrong time of the year.

Christmas, celebrating reunions

Searching for and buying Christmas presents can be completely relaxed when done from home on the Internet. Questions like: "What would she like or what would be useful to him?" or "Does it have to be that expensive?" have become redundant in our affluent society, where people have already bought the things they want and what they have not bought yet they don't really want. For this Christmas here a list of individual gift ideas to preserve personal memories and to celebrate families and friendship. These are largely photo gifts, personalised with own images.

This ensures that after the whole family has browsed through the new photo book at Christmas it will still look like new. As an environmentally aware enterprise, the printer ensures through compliance with ISO 14001* that the pages in photo books from Printing-1 remain free of toxic substances.

Glossy prints last longer

For three years Printing-1 has been offering customers the opportunity to design their individual photo book. For this the complete photo book pages are coated with an environmentally friendly glossy varnish, which improves brilliance and detail.

Environmentally friendly diversity

Customers can choose among seven different photo book formats with up to 250 pages. A longer lasting book binding is achieved with a Polyurethan (PUR) glue, which keeps the photo book pages in place. Thanks to the new High-Gloss finish option, the printed surface is protected from wear and de-colouring, ensuring a long life for the book and the photographic memories within. FotoInsight's New Photo Paper Book Makes Book Bulge Disappear

Cambridge, 20 August 2009. - Europe's most popular photo book software is now also available for Linux and Mac OS. Against an ever growing number of photo book services, FotoInsight is increasing its technological lead with the introduction of version 4.5 of FotoInsight Designer. The application is available as a free download on the photo service's website and it can create a 130 page photo book lay-out in under three minutes. The new release of the order software adds photo albums processed on thick, lustre finish photographic paper pages. The new photo paper album styles ranging from 26 to 82 pages (in steps of eight pages) are only available in the FotoInsight Designer software.

In FotoInsight's new Photo Paper Album each page lays flat

FotoInsight states that the book bulge in the new photo paper albums disappear, as the pages lay flat when the book is opened 180 degrees wide. A new binding process is being used for the album pages, which are thicker than pages in CEWE Photobooks. This allows the pages in an open photo paper album to lay flat, rather than bowing or arching up towards the spine. Flat pages make it easier to view images which spread across a double page. FotoInsight's Managing Director Klaas Brumann states: "The new printed photo album's thicker pages provide a premium feel over traditional coffee table style photo books. We expect the new photographic paper books to be popular with professional users and for wedding photo books!

Cambridge. 23 July 2009. - When the start of a new school year approaches, the school bag needs filling. The online photo printer FotoInsight from Cambridge offers a new service to individualise such items. The idea is to personally engage the youngsters with their school supplies, to ensure that they will look after them. In addition, own pictures of a pet, a group of friends or from the holidays keep positive memories alive. An aluminium water flask with a personal photograph is less likely to be kicked in-lieu of a football. The school bag will be treated with due care if the the own image has been printed onto it. FotoInsight now prints digital photographs onto practical items like spiral note pads, money boxes or fluffy key rings.

Online poster and canvas services will usually only print the customer’s image. FotoInsight is launching its new “Deco Shop”, where a matching, natural wood frame can be combined with a mounted canvas or laminated poster. Large format prints from own digital photographs will then be delivered mounted and framed, ready to decorate the wall at home or in an office.

Paris and Dublin. 23 June 2009. – The resolution of digital cameras is rising constantly. Many digital photographs could impress at home or in an office meeting room, when printed as a laminated poster or a stretched canvas in a floating frame. With the right image it makes a worthy present.

FotoInsight, a specialist serving amateur and professional photographers alike, prints canvases in different sizes from 20x30 cm (minimum resolution 800 x 1100 pixel) to 60x80 cm (2500 x 3300 pixel recommended). FotoInsight states that it uses man made optimised fibres and fade-resistant "archival" inks to guarantee longevity and brilliant colours. The hi-tech inks penetrate deep into the fabric and can therefore be printed and mounted over the edges of the wooden frame. Standardised sizes allow a largely automatic production process. According to FotoInsight this ensures constant quality and long durability at lower prices for the first time.

A Dozen Gift Ideas which have not Increased in Price

Cambridge. 25 November 2008. After many years, this will be the first Christmas in a recession. Almost 8 in 10 Britons responded that they are taking steps to make Christmas more affordable, according to research by Birmingham Midshires. The survey of more than 2,000 adults revealed the average Christmas spend will drop by £102. The costs of many important goods of daily life have increased in the current year, the inflation has reached new heights and families are tightening their belts. Not every wish will come true this year.

The recession is a good opportunity to re-think priorities in life

The sad news for children is that 14 per cent of parents will be giving their children smaller stockings this year. And Grandparents need to receive attention, too. The trend is to personalise gifts, self made presents, handicrafts, family entertainment, or a games evenings. Many families could be helped if they communicate the importance of unity at Christmas, setting a strict price limit for presents. Here a dozen gift ideas which have not gone up in price:

  • Photo calendars are a classic among the Christmas gifts – printed through a photo lab, calendars look really professional. All photo calendars like the kitchen, table and wall calendars from FotoInsight are also good value! See a  photo calendar test  here.

UK Photographic Calendar Test

The best way to create a calendar with your own photographs

There are three different ways to make your own photo calendar. If you have many photo prints which you prefer to stick onto paper and if you want to add hand drawn images, an old style pre-printed calendar template will still be useful. More versatile and interesting is making photographic calendars through software, and the result looks most professional when printed by a proper photo service. For this you normally have to use the software which the (online) photolab provides (usually) for free at http://fotoinsight.co.uk/calendar

FotoInsight offers wall and desktop calendars. All calendars are printed professionally on 250 gr/m2 paper using Indigo technology (except the Desktop calendar in tin box which is processed on photographic paper) and cost between £4.99 and £16.99 per calendar plus £2.80 delivery (Europa wide, also with seperate delivery address).

Printing-1 is the independent option for photo book calendars for Mac OS and Windows PC users, but no wall calendars. Printing-1 websites includes a kind of photo sharing service, which allows to show the layout to others online prior to a print order: http://www.printing-1.co.uk - Discount: First order £5 off.

The ECCE TERRAM Internet Services company will go to Las Vegas to present its Photo2lab Software Suite on the main photo trade fair PMA, which will take place from 31 January to 2 February 2008. Integrated into the Photo2lab Software Suite is the HDX4 Photo Manager of HDX4 GmbH. This is a HDX4 Photo SDK for professional picture optimisation.

Dortmund. Jan 21st, 2008. - HDX4 GmbH has specialised in the development of software all about the topics of burning and multimedia. A suitable tool for digital photography is the SDK HDX4 Photo Manager, which other companies can license to upgrade their own software with new functions. SDK includes the two modules HDX4 Natural Enhancement and HDX4 Upscaling, both proprietary developments from the technology laboratories of HDX4 GmbH.

A distinctive feature of the HDX4-modules is that they can help to turn any snapshot into a really professional photograph – it only takes a mouse click. So far, photographers rather used trial and error to adjust brightness, contrast and colours; now the software can detect imperfections of pictures and corrects them without need for further user intervention. Frank Simon of ECCE TERRAM: "Thanks to the HDX4-functions, dark pictures with low contrast and matt colours are definitely a thing of the past. Suddenly, the sky prints perfectly blue and details, which were in the shade become visible again."

A professionally printed calendar with own digital images must rank among the most convenient personalised gift ideas among for friends and family. A UK photo service is expanding this idea with a greater choice of calendars.

Cambridge. 21 Nov 2007. - FotoInsight is growing and the size of its photo print products seems to grow with the company. Posters, canvas printing and the photo book XL format are now followed by a new, larger photo calendar format. The largest photographic calendar is exclusive to the FotoInsight Pro software; the use of an offline ordering software client became necessary to ensure a safe upload of larger images to the lab. With the FotoInsight Pro photo calendar and photobook software comes a range of editing tools, which internet browser could not handle. Editing the calendar through a special software tool allows for example to freely position any number of images on a single page. This is useful when a event should be enhanced by scanned holiday memories, like entrance tickets, postcards or maps – these can now be integrated into a professionally printed photo calendar. The increase in design flexibility follows requests from customers, ordering personalised photo calendars year after year for friends and family.

A new service using long lasting fibres mounted onto a wooden frame for high quality, large format canvas prints is being launched during “Focus-Exhibition-Week” and in time for “Mother’s Day” by FotoInsight. The company is known for its photo gift and photo book services to be competitive through large volume, hi-tech production processes.

Cambridge, UK. 6 March 2007. – Taking good photographs has never been easier. Many digital images lingering on computer hard drives could shine if being displayed on an office wall, the reception or in the sitting room at home. Until recently photo canvas printing was done by small workshops at horrendous prices. FotoInsight claims to apply the latest technology and efficient production methods to offer what it calls big canvas prints at low prices.

FotoInsight, a specialist serving amateur and professional photographers alike, prints canvases in sizes from 20x30cm (minimum resolution 800 x 1.100 Pixel) to 60x80 cm (2.500 x 3.300 pixel recommended). FotoInsight states that it uses man made optimised fabrics and fade resistant "archival" inks to guarantee longevity and brilliant colours. The hi-tech inks penetrate deep into the fabric and can therefore be printed and mounted over the edges of the wooden frame. Standardised sizes allow a largely automatic production process. According to FotoInsight this ensures constant quality and long durability at lower prices for the first time.

Free software from FotoInsight helps to create coffee table style photo books with fully editable covers. Without any prior experience, beginners can present and preserve their own photos in individual, carefully crafted, glossy photo books.

Cambridge, UK. 22 November 2006. – The personal, coffee table style photo book is rapidly developing into a very popular photo print product and is about to overtake the traditional 6”x4” print as the most common photographic printed output in British households. Rarely has the development of a consumer product progressed as quickly. FotoInsight of Cambridge, UK launched photo books from an online facility with limited editing features one year ago. Today the company FotoInsight is introducing a revolution in Photo Book creation software – a time saving fade-proof record of precious memories for print. It allows novice and inexperienced users to layout their digital images in full colour double page spread, move, crop and edit pictures to any size and add text freely within the photo book, on the cover and on the book spine.

FotoInsight’s Managing Director Klaas Brumann comments: “Our customer’s expectations have been growing rapidly. We have decided to provide photo books only through our software, which we is compact download. Our free software provides a photos book draft within three minutes. To the astonishment of most, it looks just like a professionally laid out coffee table style photo book.” As photo books can be made with up to 98 pages, which can take in excess of 500 images the software also helps to improve the online upload to the photo book production facilities used by FotoInsight. Andy White, Internet Sales Manager at FotoInsight's production partner Standard Photographic Ltd states: "We are extremely proud to launch this exciting new project with FotoInsight in the UK. The photo book is far and above anything else on the market. This is a major step forward for both companies."

Greenstreet break with tradition by introducing a revolution in scrapbook creation – a mess free, time saving fade-proof record of precious memories for print, for the web and which can even be displayed on TV screens!

Cambridge. 30 October 2006. - In the age of the digital camera and camera phones we all snap away happily taking lots of pictures to remember events by. However generally these languish on computer hard drives and the personal memory fades as to who, why, where and what the pictures were about. Which is why in recent years scrapbooking has seen a revival. Greenstreet have combined the digital age with the rapidly growing interest in scrapbooking and taken this to the next step by creating Greenstreet’s Digital Scrapbook – bringing all kinds of new possibilities to the art - providing limitless supplies and making it easier and cheaper to capture moments in time and to share with friends and family.

Langmeier Backup: Remedy Against the Loss of Data

Swiss security software specialist Langmeier launches Backup 3.2.
Small and practical like a Swiss Army knife, this application will run backups reliably in the background.

Pfäffikon SZ. August 3rd, 2006 – Our daily lives and routines increasingly depend on information stored on computer our hard drives: Contracts and contacts, appointments, e-mails, spread sheets, presentations and digital photos. A total or partial loss of such information is equivalent to a major disaster for business users and increasingly, for home users too. The simple reason why such catastrophes happen is the lack of backups and if backups have been made they can be out of date or faulty. The Swiss data security developer Langmeier said: “The launch of Backup 3.2 puts special emphasis on making routine backups easier and avoiding backup errors”.

In cases of theft, fire or flooding insurance money will cover in most cases the purchase of replacement equipment, though usually not the cost associated with recovering the data. It is an often overlooked fact, that the data is much more valuable than the PC or hard drive. A virus or a defect on the hard disk can quickly cause havoc. In that case, recent versions of files may have been affected and earlier backup versions are required. That is why it is so important to run backups on a regular basis with history and version tracking. According to “Langmeier Backup” the software was developed with the objective to overcome barriers to running backups by making the routine simpler and automatic, running in the background and avoiding interruptions in the work routine on the PC or network. The backups can also be stored to any location on the computer, the network which Windows can recognize as a drive or to an ftp server over the internet, where the application can also apply 256Bit encryption. The backup data can be accessed at these locations at any time, using a file path resembling the original, which makes the backup files usable.

Digital Camera Images: How large can you go?

Digital Cameras Images can now be Really Big

The advances in the resolution of digital images allow most digital camera pics to be printed as super sized posters. With the majority of inkjet printers limited to A4, online digital photo labs cater for large format prints and photographic merchandise.

Cambridge, UK. 26 July 2006. – The price of ink for home printers may be the one price besides that of petrol that frequently infuriates consumers. It doesn't take long for the cost of ink-cartridge replacements to exceed the price of the printer. A large format, hi-resolution photographic print can drain entire refills, if the printer is capable to handle larger formats at all. Freeing digital camera users from the limits of their inkjet printer is a niche professional online labs like http://fotoinsight.co.uk are catering for.

Exposure to light, heat, ozone and air pollution causes the ink used in home printers to fade. Recent research carried out by ‘Wilhelm Imaging Research’ found that “refilled cartridges often produce photos that begin to noticeably degrade in a number of months.” Using real photographic paper on large format lab equipment, firms like FotoInsight produce results, which tend to look 'richer', and are more durable with regard to handling by sweaty fingers, humid environments, and fading in daylight.

Photo service Software Developer announced to publish ‘Transfer Ordering Network’ Protocol during Photokina

Setting up a digital photo processing service in store or online is becoming easier with ready made software solutions. Large central labs offer these to tie in their customers, while specialist developers like ECCE TERRAM sell software components that increase the services independence and negotiation power.

Oldenburg. 26 July 2006 – Today the vast majority of photographs taken are digital. Online photo services converting digital images into traditional photographic paper prints in familiar 6×4" (10x15cm), prints are increasingly profitable. Compared to home inkjet prints, pictures on photographic paper tend to look much 'richer', and are vastly more durable with regard to handling by sweaty fingers, humid environments, and fading in daylight. Such services cater for business with new photographic gift items and product ideas. The specialist internet software developer ECCE TERRAM will be presenting the latest off the shelf, modular software solutions for online photo services, web portals, photo labs and purchasing associations at the international Photokina exhibition in Cologne in September 2006, including releases currently being prepared. As a Photokina highlight, the company will also publish its complete ‘Transfer Ordering Network’ protocol for free usage.

Reuse Carrier Bags & Reduce Waste

catapa's picture

Using canvas tote bags helps to reduce the number of supermarket plastic carrier bags wasted each year. Photo services print digital photographs onto canvas tote bags replacing the supermarket logo.

Encouraging consumers to use fewer environmentally damaging plastic carriers has long been a challenge. If modern urban life had a flag it would be a plastic bag: ugly, somewhere unreachable and likely to remain there long after the last bit of open space has been concreted into a supermarket car park. The UK's largest supermarket chain said this month that it would seek to cut the number of carrier bags it gives to customers by 25% over the next two years.

Much more could be achieved by getting people to use their own, durable carrier bags.
Some photo printing services apply digital photos onto canvas for long lasting carrier bags. These reusable photo tote bags start from £4.99 at http://fotoinsight.co.uk/gifts or €6.99 at http://fotoinsight.com and are an ideal, personalised and useful present. Over the course of its long life a reusable Tote Bag helps avoiding thousands of plastic supermarket carriers when used regularly. Why carry a supermarket’s logo when the carrier can feature ones favourite photograph. One of the photo services printing onto canvas, cotton and tote bags is FotoInsight of Cambridge (http://fotoinsight.co.uk). In light of the recent discussions about global warming, CO2 emissions and land fill photo tote bags may prove a smart, sub £8/€12 gift idea.

VSO Software announces the release of Image Resizer, freeware that resizes and converts images between different formats. This handy application is a useful tool for anyone who wants to store digital pictures on a PC and wants to email them, move them easily from one folder to another or to free up space on the hard drive.

Toulouse. April 28th, 2006 -- In one click, Image Resizer by VSO Software resizes pictures or changes their format as desired: the reduced file size enables faster loading, improved pictures management and saves storage space. Image files which are smaller in size are more easily sent by email, something difficult to do with the original file size. It is also the perfect tool for webmasters or people wanting to publish images on the internet.

Image Resizer handles images in all popular formats: bmp, jpeg, gif, png and can converts them at the preferred resolution (from 320x200 to 1600x1200, including even Ipod photo and video, Sony PSPS, HDTV and DVD). The images will adjust automatically to the size of the desktop or to the source used to display them.

FotoInsight is Preparing FIFA Photo Book for Germany

FotoInsight of Cambridge assured the FIFA photo book product in the world cup host country

Cambridge, UK. 28 April 2006. – This summer will see millions of people worldwide re-arrange their daily routines and work life to squeeze in as much footie as possible! In time for the football world cup Cambridge based FotoInsight is going to launch through its German service an innovative range of photo books with a FIFA license displaying up to 312 images through its online photo processing. From Cambridge Managing Director Klaas Brumann comments: “Pictures of matches, holidays and parties are fading away in shoeboxes and increasingly on hard drives of aging computers. FotoInsight’s mission is to prevent photographic memories from fading. A printed album, like the upcoming FIFA protective photo book, helps to preserve all the memories of a great world cup in order, crisp colours and accessible.

Former director claims Kodak mislead customers on the quality of online photo sharing.

Can online photo sharing be free?

“A former employee has accused Eastman Kodak Co. of illegally tampering with the quality of customers' digital photos and making false advertising claims, according to a statement issued Wednesday (29 March 2006) by the former employee's attorney” reports DylanMcGrath, business editor at AP.

A competing online photo printing service, FotoInsight of Cambridge, UK distances itself from unlimited, free online photo hosting. FotoInsight’s Managing Director Klaas Brumann states: “Providing quality prints for a few cents or pence does not combine with unlimited online storage of multi megabyte image files. FotoInsight only offers uncompressed, printing quality online archiving. We have always stated that this can only be maintained with an honest time limit.”

According to FotoInsight, providing unlimited online photo sharing at print quality is unsustainable with ever larger digital camera image files. http://fotoinsight.co.uk and http://fotoinsight.com provide an online archive option with print orders only, limited to one month, after which users may pay for an extension. Klaas Brumann comments: “Not everything on the internet can be free. There are plenty of sites specializing in online photo sharing, which is a feasible service as long as there is a tap on the size. Ofoto's (Kodak) business idea to use print quality photo files for unlimited hosting is wrong”.
