All-clear for UV varnishes in the production of onlineprinters.comNeustadt an der Aisch – Hard-wearing, high-gloss and classy. Those are the properties of the modern UV varnishes the online print shop www.onlineprinters.com now uses to round up their portfolio for the finishing techniques of high-gloss finished printed matter. "Our customers increasingly ask for UV varnishes to be used as finish for their high-grade printed material", Bernd Schürmann of Onlineprinters GmbH explains. "From now on, we offer the services of printing and modern finishing techniques in a variety of qualities from one source", the Plant Manager says. The new UV varnishing machine Colibri 74 is able to provide flyers, posters, business cards, postcards, business portfolios and the envelopes of quality magazines with a brilliant, high-gloss finish. In the online shop www.onlineprinters.com , the customer has always had a choice between standard finishing using printing or water-based varnishes and durable synthetic foil laminates. Now, the high-quality variation of UV varnish complements the portfolio of surface finishes. In addition to the highly brilliant and scratch-resistant coating, another benefit for the customer is the cost-effectiveness of UV varnishes. The surfaces are durable and of classy appearance, and at the same time clearly less expensive than the standard foil lamination that is in common use, for example, in the catering industry.

1001 Jackets in the Internet

omsr's picture

Submitted by omsr on Sat, 2008-08-09 13:44.

In the movie “Aviator” Leonardo DiCaprio embodies the dazzling and even mysterious character of the eccentric millionaire and visionary Howard Hughes. Following a real oil painting that shows the aviation obsessed man with a greasy pilot leather jacket the actor was dressed with a brown leather blouson made by a known manufacturer. And it happened what happens often in such moments: Leo’s leather jacket become a fashionable cult object over night. All viewers that had enjoyed the movie wanted to have such a jacket.

Funny enough that the real Howard Hughes probably never had a jacket like this. But that did not do the strong demand any harm. And so the pilot jacket became the secret movie star. As you can see the topic jackets is full of surprises and amusing stories. And the internet makes you wish for more. The portal http://www.jacken4you.de pays attention to this piece of clothing with the categories baseball jackets, blazer, down jackets, fleeces, flight jackets in general, jeans jackets, hood jackets, leather jackets, biker jackets, outdoor jackets, rain coats, retro jackets, sports coats, ski coats, summer jackets, sports jackets, autumnal jackets, windproof jackets and winter jackets. The exciting stories about the stylish never ending topic were mixed up with an entertaining sort of “nice to know”. At the category “others” related topics are introduced (for example jewellery and bargains). Here you may also find the surprisingly easy way to get jackets for one Euro. The great partner website http://www.top-jacken.de joins the world of jackets and adds infotainment about “coats“. Here, everybody can find his or her favourite jacket. This is for sure.

The ladies in the ancient world already knew how to create attention with loudly clacking heels. Clothes make the man and men love clothes

It was only a question of time until a happy and informative blog round about this trendy topic was established. The fashion interested internet onlooker can find aspects, insights and facts about the topics accessories, baby fashion, children’s fashion, ladies’ fashion, designer fashion, evening dresses, men’s clothes, clothes in general, fashion catalog, fashion shop and sports fashion at http://www.mykleidung.de. However, due to the clarity of the texts one cannot comment the articles. The category “others” is a true treasure trove for interesting information that treat the normally rather close fashion topic a bit more casual. For example, you can read there that diamonds are not only girls’ best friends and the ladies’ favorite jewel, but that they are also used for complex manufacturing of robes as glittering accessory. Such cultivated and richly decorated textiles are literally a wearable luxury of timeless elegance and constant value.

HDX4 Photo Manager will be presented on the PMA in Las Vegas

benjagreenberg's picture

Submitted by benjagreenberg on Mon, 2008-01-21 16:33.

The ECCE TERRAM Internet Services company will go to Las Vegas to present its Photo2lab Software Suite on the main photo trade fair PMA, which will take place from 31 January to 2 February 2008. Integrated into the Photo2lab Software Suite is the HDX4 Photo Manager of HDX4 GmbH. This is a HDX4 Photo SDK for professional picture optimisation.

Dortmund. Jan 21st, 2008. - HDX4 GmbH has specialised in the development of software all about the topics of burning and multimedia. A suitable tool for digital photography is the SDK HDX4 Photo Manager, which other companies can license to upgrade their own software with new functions. SDK includes the two modules HDX4 Natural Enhancement and HDX4 Upscaling, both proprietary developments from the technology laboratories of HDX4 GmbH.

A distinctive feature of the HDX4-modules is that they can help to turn any snapshot into a really professional photograph – it only takes a mouse click. So far, photographers rather used trial and error to adjust brightness, contrast and colours; now the software can detect imperfections of pictures and corrects them without need for further user intervention. Frank Simon of ECCE TERRAM: "Thanks to the HDX4-functions, dark pictures with low contrast and matt colours are definitely a thing of the past. Suddenly, the sky prints perfectly blue and details, which were in the shade become visible again."

TWIN-ICI – innovative brand protection at the very highest level

Jura JSP GmbH, a company located in Vienna, and the German firm WEILBURGER Graphics GmbH have agreed to cooperate on the development of new, highly effective security processes for the print industry.

Both companies are active members of PrintCity, an alliance of businesses in the global printing, packaging and publishing markets.

The aim of the cooperation is to combine the specialist know-how of Jura JSP in the areas of high-security printing and brand protection with the comprehensive expertise of WEILBURGER Graphics in the field of print finishing for packaging, labels and commercial printing in order to be able to develop new, innovative security solutions for the protection of printed packaging and labels against counterfeiting.

This cooperation has already produced results so good that they must be described as a pioneering development in brand protection.

Under the name TWIN-ICI, and on the basis of market demands, the two companies have developed a novel security element which could revolutionise print production in the field of brand protection!

Thanks to the deployment of the most up-to-date materials and techniques, TWIN-ICI can currently be defined as high-security counterfeit protection, yet in its implementation it calls for only minor process modifications and can be produced inline at favourable cost via standard production systems in packaging and label printing in almost all applications.

Mika Valkonen, Managing Director,
Procemex, Finland

Augsburg, Germany, May 24, 2007 – PrintCity welcomes new member Procemex, a leading supplier of camera based web monitoring & web inspection systems to the alliance and its publishing, commercial & web activities.

Procemex is a machine vision company based in Jyväskylä, Finland, and since 1990 the same core team has been continuously providing leading edge image processing innovations for troubleshooting paper related processes. This technology is today also being used by many of the leading web offset and gravure printers in Europe.

Procemex is a specialist in filming and analyzing web breaks, web defects and in general printing press runnability problems. It helps its customers solve printing press efficiency concerns relating to paper, process and machinery.

This is done by combining innovative camera based technology, both for improving printing press efficiency and inspecting paper quality. This unique capability is a valuable strength helping Procemex to expand its activities in the world of printing in 2007 & 2008.

According to Mika Valkonen, Managing Director of Procemex, the reasons for joining PrintCity in 2007 are, “We have expanded our activities 3-4 years ago from paper into printing and see that there is need for deeper understanding of the root causes of gravure and web offset printing problems.

“One of the reasons for joining PrintCity is to gain more experience in the whole printing process. What could be a better environment to deepen, and in return, to share your knowledge, than this type of cooperation with the experts in all key areas of printing”, concludes Valkonen.

Rainer Kuhn, PrintCity managing director, welcomes Procemex into the ‘connection of competence’ alliance by commenting, “The strength of the PrintCity alliance is the wide range of companies, technologies and capabilities working together. Procemex will have a very important contribution to our connection of competence work and I am sure that they will involve themselves in PrintCity projects and activities.

We welcome Procemex and encourage other similar companies to discuss with PrintCity how the alliance can help them”.

Procemex has confirmed that it will participate at drupa 2008 within PrintCity in hall 6.

Cambridge. 30 October 2006. - In the age of the digital camera and camera phones we all snap away happily taking lots of pictures to remember events by. However generally these languish on computer hard drives and the personal memory fades as to who, why, where and what the pictures were about. Which is why in recent years scrapbooking has seen a revival. Greenstreet have combined the digital age with the rapidly growing interest in scrapbooking and taken this to the next step by creating Greenstreet’s Digital Scrapbook – bringing all kinds of new possibilities to the art - providing limitless supplies and making it easier and cheaper to capture moments in time and to share with friends and family.

RONDO powers to technological breakthrough thanks to PrintCity partners

Augsburg, Germany, September 25, 2006 – Pharmaceutical packaging manufacturer RONDO has increased productivity and cut costs with improvements driven through by some of the biggest names in the graphic arts industry - all part of the PrintCity alliance.

Swiss-based RONDO AG, which is part of Körber SA and employs 200 people, specialises in printing and manufacture of paperboard packaging with around 90% of its turnover coming from the pharmaceutical field.

In order to meet the strict quality management requirements for packaging, RONDO, a specialist in short runs, continually invests in technologies to remain at the forefront of development, in particular reducing the number of internal interfaces.

One innovation involved acquiring an integrated business management software package, called Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP). The company can co-ordinate its purchasing, production marketing or human resources activities around the same system. Not wanting a mixture of software systems, instead requiring all inputs through to the SAP software package.

RONDO then asked for help through its pre-press (Esko), press (MAN Roland) and post-press (Bobst) equipment suppliers - all have played a key role within PrintCity's world-acclaimed JDF development - and the SAP partner company, Dr Lauterbach & Partner, which developed the administration-to-production interface.

Photo service Software Developer announced to publish ‘Transfer Ordering Network’ Protocol during Photokina

Setting up a digital photo processing service in store or online is becoming easier with ready made software solutions. Large central labs offer these to tie in their customers, while specialist developers like ECCE TERRAM sell software components that increase the services independence and negotiation power.

Oldenburg. 26 July 2006 – Today the vast majority of photographs taken are digital. Online photo services converting digital images into traditional photographic paper prints in familiar 6×4" (10x15cm), prints are increasingly profitable. Compared to home inkjet prints, pictures on photographic paper tend to look much 'richer', and are vastly more durable with regard to handling by sweaty fingers, humid environments, and fading in daylight. Such services cater for business with new photographic gift items and product ideas. The specialist internet software developer ECCE TERRAM will be presenting the latest off the shelf, modular software solutions for online photo services, web portals, photo labs and purchasing associations at the international Photokina exhibition in Cologne in September 2006, including releases currently being prepared. As a Photokina highlight, the company will also publish its complete ‘Transfer Ordering Network’ protocol for free usage.

Reuse Carrier Bags & Reduce Waste

catapa's picture

Submitted by catapa on Mon, 2006-06-19 11:44.

Using canvas tote bags helps to reduce the number of supermarket plastic carrier bags wasted each year. Photo services print digital photographs onto canvas tote bags replacing the supermarket logo.

Encouraging consumers to use fewer environmentally damaging plastic carriers has long been a challenge. If modern urban life had a flag it would be a plastic bag: ugly, somewhere unreachable and likely to remain there long after the last bit of open space has been concreted into a supermarket car park. The UK's largest supermarket chain said this month that it would seek to cut the number of carrier bags it gives to customers by 25% over the next two years.

Much more could be achieved by getting people to use their own, durable carrier bags.
Some photo printing services apply digital photos onto canvas for long lasting carrier bags. These reusable photo tote bags start from £4.99 at http://fotoinsight.co.uk/gifts or €6.99 at http://fotoinsight.com and are an ideal, personalised and useful present. Over the course of its long life a reusable Tote Bag helps avoiding thousands of plastic supermarket carriers when used regularly. Why carry a supermarket’s logo when the carrier can feature ones favourite photograph. One of the photo services printing onto canvas, cotton and tote bags is FotoInsight of Cambridge (http://fotoinsight.co.uk). In light of the recent discussions about global warming, CO2 emissions and land fill photo tote bags may prove a smart, sub £8/€12 gift idea.

Airbus maintains target date for A380 certification and first delivery by year end.

SBC Administration's picture

Submitted by SBC Administration on Wed, 2006-06-14 23:16.
Airbus has informed its customers today that a review of the A380 programme has shown that the delivery schedule will undergo a shift of six to seven months due to production ramp-up issues. In parallel, Airbus confirmed to its customers the satisfactory progress of the flight test campaign, which is expected to lead to certification and delivery of the first aircraft by the end of the year. The shift in the production ramp-up is likely to limit aircraft delivery to nine in 2007.

The new delays are caused by industrial issues only. They are mainly traceable to bottlenecks formed in the definition, manufacturing and installation of electrical systems and resulting harnesses.

As testing and development advances, as well as customisation specifications from airlines are integrated, modifications of electrical systems and reworks have been necessary at section level, progressively disturbing the final assembly flow. A new organisation for the equipment of sections and a revised pacing of transfer to the final assembly line have been put in place, to absorb past inventory build-up and to deal with further mitigating factors. As a result, there are currently 15 aircraft already assembled, including the static and fatigue test frames, while production of sections for aircraft serial number 36 has started.

A recent programme review has led Airbus to the conclusion that 2007 deliveries will likely be limited to nine, and that a shortfall of five to nine aircraft deliveries in 2008 and around five aircraft  in 2009 could be expected, compared to initial delivery planning. The review also concluded that further actions are required to secure a ramp-up recovery in 2008 and 2009.

OLED Displays: Is there an alternative to ink-jet printing?

San Francisco, June 6, 2006 – The first high-resolution, full-color organic light-emitting diode (OLED) display based on a direct photolithographic process will be presented by the research group of Professor Klaus Meerholz (University of Cologne, Germany) at this year’s Society for Information Display (SID) symposium being held in San Francisco on June 6-9.

The direct photolithography technique avoids most of the issues involved with the prominent ink-jet-printing technique. The new process was developed in collaboration with Merck OLED Materials GmbH (formerly Covion), a Merck KGaA affiliate based in Frankfurt, Germany. Since the infrastructure in existing liquid crystal display (LCD) production facilities can be adapted easily for the new technology, the German researchers are convinced the new technique will allow for very cost-effective display manufacture.

OLED technology is among the most promising possibilities for the next generation of flat-panel displays. The intense research and development investments during the last decade have lead to tremendous advances in performance and stability. However, it still remains a challenge to pixelate the emissive layer of an OLED display as there are three competing requirements: (1) Being compatible with large substrates to satisfy the customer’s demand for increasingly larger displays, (2) defining extremely fine pixel structures to meet the resolution requirements for the new generation of HDTV- and micro-displays, and (3) significantly reducing production costs compared to existing display technologies.

With the newly developed direct lithography technique, all of these requirements seem to be within reach for the first time. Unlike other approaches such as ink-jet printing, this technique does not require the development of an entirely new process technology but rather relies on the chemical modification of the organic material.

How to compress, organize or move digital images on the PC? VSO-Software: Image Resizer

catapa's picture

VSO Software announces the release of Image Resizer, freeware that resizes and converts images between different formats. This handy application is a useful tool for anyone who wants to store digital pictures on a PC and wants to email them, move them easily from one folder to another or to free up space on the hard drive.

Toulouse. April 28th, 2006 -- In one click, Image Resizer by VSO Software resizes pictures or changes their format as desired: the reduced file size enables faster loading, improved pictures management and saves storage space. Image files which are smaller in size are more easily sent by email, something difficult to do with the original file size. It is also the perfect tool for webmasters or people wanting to publish images on the internet.

Image Resizer handles images in all popular formats: bmp, jpeg, gif, png and can converts them at the preferred resolution (from 320x200 to 1600x1200, including even Ipod photo and video, Sony PSPS, HDTV and DVD). The images will adjust automatically to the size of the desktop or to the source used to display them.

FotoInsight of Cambridge assured the FIFA photo book product in the world cup host country

Cambridge, UK. 28 April 2006. – This summer will see millions of people worldwide re-arrange their daily routines and work life to squeeze in as much footie as possible! In time for the football world cup Cambridge based FotoInsight is going to launch through its German service an innovative range of photo books with a FIFA license displaying up to 312 images through its online photo processing. From Cambridge Managing Director Klaas Brumann comments: “Pictures of matches, holidays and parties are fading away in shoeboxes and increasingly on hard drives of aging computers. FotoInsight’s mission is to prevent photographic memories from fading. A printed album, like the upcoming FIFA protective photo book, helps to preserve all the memories of a great world cup in order, crisp colours and accessible.

Former director claims Kodak mislead customers on the quality of online photo sharing.

Can online photo sharing be free?

“A former employee has accused Eastman Kodak Co. of illegally tampering with the quality of customers' digital photos and making false advertising claims, according to a statement issued Wednesday (29 March 2006) by the former employee's attorney” reports DylanMcGrath, business editor at AP.

A competing online photo printing service, FotoInsight of Cambridge, UK distances itself from unlimited, free online photo hosting. FotoInsight’s Managing Director Klaas Brumann states: “Providing quality prints for a few cents or pence does not combine with unlimited online storage of multi megabyte image files. FotoInsight only offers uncompressed, printing quality online archiving. We have always stated that this can only be maintained with an honest time limit.”

According to FotoInsight, providing unlimited online photo sharing at print quality is unsustainable with ever larger digital camera image files. http://fotoinsight.co.uk and http://fotoinsight.com provide an online archive option with print orders only, limited to one month, after which users may pay for an extension. Klaas Brumann comments: “Not everything on the internet can be free. There are plenty of sites specializing in online photo sharing, which is a feasible service as long as there is a tap on the size. Ofoto's (Kodak) business idea to use print quality photo files for unlimited hosting is wrong”.

  • The MAN Group will concentrate on four high-growth business areas
  • Allianz Capital Partners will develop MAN Roland Druckmaschinen and finance its growth
  • MAN Roland to gain more flexibility and power

MAN and Allianz Capital Partners, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Allianz Group, are founding a joint venture with the purpose to purchase MAN Roland Druckmaschinen AG. The intention is to further develop the world's second largest manufacturer of printing systems and go public with it in several years. The corresponding letter of intent has been signed; MAN AG will retain 35% equity in the joint venture and continue to play a constructive role in the company's development. Both parties have agreed to maintain strict confidentiality on all details of the agreement until final completion.

MAN's CEO Håkan Samuelsson says, "We thus reduce our core activities to four and can focus the MAN Group on high-growth transport related engineering business sectors, which we will develop comprehensively in the future. For us, this is a historic decision that will enable us to structure our company even more clearly and make it more profitable. We still see great potential for MAN Roland Druckmaschinen on world markets, but we are sure that the company will be able to unfold better as an independent entity and react to market requirements more flexibly."

Thomas Pütter, chairman of Allianz Capital Partners' management board says, "MAN Roland's strong market position and excellent product know-how give it a solid base for increasing its growth and playing a significant role in the coming consolidation in this branch. We want to support the company in this important phase of its development and use our expertise as a private equity investor to strategically develop MAN Roland Druckmaschinen."

Gerd Finkbeiner, CEO of MAN Roland says, "This step means a new era for MAN Roland. It will strengthen our position as an independent global solution-provider and increase our options. The company and its employees will gain a long-term perspective as well. Continuity in the management, corporate structure and MAN Roland brand names will ensure that the company retains its credibility and reliability for customers and employees. This will now be complemented by even greater flexibility and more rigorous decision-making processes."

The MAN Roland Druckmaschinen Group, whose history goes back to the year 1845, is the world's second largest manufacturer and provider of printing systems. Employing circa 8,800 employees, the company produces and markets sheet, illustration and newspaper web printing systems as well as the accompanying products and services. Its distribution network now includes 120 offices and sales partners around the world. With a business volume of €1,738 million in the 2005 fiscal year, the company earned an operative profit of €65 million.

Allianz Capital Partners GmbH (ACP), founded in 1998, is responsible for direct investments in the area of private equity within the Allianz Group. FotoInsight is making it easier to get real photographic paper prints, greeting cards

CeBIT, Hannover. 13 March 2006. – FotoInsight.co.uk announces the release of its new photo software package called Home Photo Service. According to FotoInsight the application resolves eight common problems of digital photography. During the first three months FotoInsight is distributing free copies off its website: http://FotoInsight.co.uk/pro

Digital photography’s popularity has already overtaken analogue colour photography. While photographic prints on inkjet printers still lack behind in quality and price the digital format has taken consumers and business users by storm because of the ease and speed at which images can be stored and transferred across networks including the internet. Once the hard disk is filling up with hi-res images FotoInsight’s Home Photo Service software helps to:
1.- escape lack of hard disk space and high storage costs.
2.- back-up photo collections onto CD-R.
3.- edit, turn, flip, crop digital images, remove red eyes and more.
4.- convert image file to jpeg or other formats.
5.- print on real photographic paper at the same prices as with traditional (analogue) photo processing (from 9p per print).
6.- organise image collections and albums and to find images back.
7.- create slide shows of important events or holiday pictures.
8.- be creative: Print calendars, frames, greeting cards.
