Natural balance - environmental protection and sustainability at WEILBURGER Graphics
Press statement – for immediate release
Natural balance - environmental protection and sustainability at WEILBURGER Graphics Gerhardshofen, June 22nd 2009 – The bigger you get, the more responsibility you have to take on! Currently consisting of 11 companies both at home and abroad, the GREBE Group is among the leading providers of special varnishes worldwide. With a total of over 750 employees and an overall production volume of 34,000 tonnes of lacquers and coatings per year, the Group as a whole takes environmental protection very seriously. Since the very beginning, environmentally sound production and the ongoing conservation of resources have been matters of great importance to WEILBURGER Graphics GmbH. In view of the growing shortage of raw materials resources and the increases in the prices of raw materials and energy connected with that shortage, varnish systems based on raw materials which are independent of mineral oil are becoming more and more important. Now, with the help of its own in-house research and development department and in a direct dialogue with the suppliers, WEILBURGER Graphics has succeeded in developing water-based overprint varnish systems and making them ready for the market. The varnishes meet WEILBURGER's well-known quality demands while being based on natural, renewable raw materials, i.e. the system of resins that occurs in nature and the raw materials that can be obtained from them. In the new SENOLITH® WB NR product class, which pays tribute to the market's increasing environmental awareness, ranges of gloss and matt varnishes are already available. Another special development is the SENOLITH® FP product class of water-based and UV-curing varnish systems, which were developed for the packaging of food and have already been introduced on to the market. Especially the SENOLITH® FP UV products have been kept free of benzophenone and 4-methylbenzophenone since the very beginning. Here, WEILBURGER Graphics made a conscious choice to use high-quality photoinitiators for the lasting protection of the consumer. All the raw materials components used in the SENOLITH® WB and SENOLITH® UV varnish recipes meet the requirements of the European Inventory of Existing Commercial Chemical Substances (EINECS), the European Printing Ink Association (EuPIA), the Rohstoffausschlussliste für Druckfarben und zugehörige Produkte and the REACH Regulation 1907/2006. All the varnish systems provided by WEILBURGER Graphics GmbH are free of heavy metals, toxic components and substances of very high concern (SVHC) in accordance with Regulation 1907/2006 EC. Not only that. At WEILBURGER Graphics, long-term environmental protection also means the lowest possible emission levels for hazardous substances along the entire production and supply chain, and the resolute implementation of a functional cleaning and recycling concept. For years, WEILBURGER Graphics has been employing large re-usable containers in the context of environmentally friendly cleaning and recycling. The water required for mechanical cleaning processes and the washing water incurred in the use of SENOLITH® WB products on customers' premises (approx. 800 m3 / year) is reprocessed at reasonable cost in WEILBURGER Graphics' own ultra-filtration plant and duly recycled. WEILBURGER Graphics' emissions record is one to be proud of. With an average electricity consumption of 400,000 kWh for the entire year not only have CO2-emissions been able to be reduced to 0 g via the shrewd purchase of 'green' electricity, generated 100 % hydroelectrically in the region; the move has also ensured that WEILBURGER Graphics does not make any contribution to the contamination with radioactive waste which would be incurred by the generation of that energy by nuclear methods. In addition to that, preliminary studies are being carried out into the possibility of using solar energy at the works via photovoltaic installations and the options for the use of a comprehensive rainwater system. So here, once again, WEILBURGER Graphics is proving that entrepreneurial success can only be ensured in the long term with the aid of holistic concepts and their resolute implementation. But any well achieved photograph in sufficient resolution could decorate an office or home. A framed poster or canvas print from a photograph is in any case more personal than a poster from a furniture store. A few years ago, during a visit to a well know Swedish furniture chain, I noticed that most of the posters on the shelf had already been there in my own youth. This popular chain charges about £30 for a framed print. Own photographs printed onto a canvas cost about twice as much, but are infinitely more individual than posters from stock and they preserve personal memories. Instead of standard decoration for our teenager's room we printed a photograph from her skiing holidays which she chose, onto a large canvas. The print was so good and popular, that many more poster and canvas prints have followed since. It doesn't really matter if a poster print from an artist makes a higher cultural claim. Own photographs reflect the photographers impressions, and thanks to digital technology, these can be reproduced, just like when telling a story through pictures instead of words. Most people with digital images from holidays, parties or family pics have such images which should be on display.
Villas and holiday houses on Pantelleria, Lipari and other Sicilian islandsWhen in 1949 Rossellini, together with the actress Bergmann and his film crew, disembarked at Stromboli the island must have seemed an ancient, mysterious world, a wild, far away land dominated by its volcano, as if it were a divinity. The pictures of the star walking with bare feet on the black rocks, among children and fishermen, were known all over the world. After nearly 60 years from the film “Stromboli, land of God”, that strip of land between water and fire still keeps intact its charm and delights the visitors offering a unique contrast between the harshness of its nature and the beautiful landscapes.
From the volcanic Stromboli to the fishermen’s village of Marettimo, from the original low buildings “dammusi” to the ancient, typical gardens in Pantelleria, the Sicilian islands are many, little gems in the Mediterranean that have never been corrupted by the mass tourism. DiCasaInSicilia offers a selection of special holiday accommodation on the islands: terraces with gardens - full of cicas plants - that gently slope to the sea, Aeolian houses, dammusi and fishermen’s small houses. WEILBURGER Graphics GmbH News
WEILBURGER Graphics News concerning Benzophenone and 4-Methyl-BenzophenoneGerhardshofen, 23.02.2009 – On the basis of a report published by the “immediate warning system“ of the Federal Ministry for nutrition, agriculture and consumer protection dated 16th February 2009 relating to a case in Belgium of migration of the photoinitiators Benzophenone and 4-Methyl-Benzophenone caused by UV-hardening printing ink and –varnish in a box for cereals(SWN 2009/0118), as well as to other documented cases of migration of the same substances in cardboard boxes of chocolate bars from Belgium (SWN 2009/0118-add01, 2009/0118-add02, 2009/0118-add03) and the Netherlands (2009/0118-add04), the food packaging branch is stirred up. By the use of this newsletter, we would like to inform you, as our customers, about the backgrounds. First of all: None of our lacquers of our SENOLITH® UV FP (Food Packaging) product class contains Benzophenone or 4-Methyl-Benzophenone and no lacquers of WEILBURGER Graphics GmbH were applied in the above mentioned cases. Benzophenone and 4-Methyl-Benzophenone can be used as photoinitiators with UV lacquers. This applies to our SENOLITH® UV lacquers which are not designed for food packaging. Although at present there is no specific migration limit for 4-Methyl-Benzophenone, we militated against using this substance, as well as Benzophenone in our SENOLITH® UV FP product class right from the start. Therefore our lacquers of the SENOLITH® UV FP product class do not contain any of such substances and you can continue using them without any problems for printing and varnishing packages for the food industry. The FABES Forschungs-GmbH, an independent institute for analytics and evaluation of mass transfer, which tests among others our lacquers of the SENOLITH® UV FP product class regularly for the compliance with the European and German law for food packaging, moreover certificates it. As both substances mentioned are in principle not contained in water-based dispersion coatings, the danger of migration of Benzophenone and 4-Methyl-Benzophenone in SENOLITH® WB coatings is excluded. However the application of special inks and varnishes is inevitable regarding food packaging. We continue recommending our customers that they only use varnishes of our SENOLITH® FP product class for food packaging. Please do not hesitate to contact us in case of further questions. Call us or use our online community to discuss about this or other topics with other members. The company thus again raises the claim of presenting technically sophisticated and innovative solutions. In many laboratories, online photo orders in which digital images are printed on traditional photographic paper exceeded the volume of analogue photos in 2008. Digital image processing continues to be a vigorously growing industry. Numbers from the 2008 Holiday Season retail trade in many places show that the economic crisis ihas n no way dampened the pleasure provided by digital images. Consumers’ desire for unique moments or very personal photo gifts remains strong. Very few software developers have the experience and knowledge to create a complete solution – from consumer to production, for wholesale laboratories and photo services in the online and in-store market. Steinemann Technology acquires SPS® ScreenPrintingSystems
St. Gallen, 7 January 2009
Steinemann Technology acquires SPS® ScreenPrintingSystems Steinemann Technology now has a complete portfolio of solutions to meet all screen printing requirements / Decisive strengthening of the Graphic Division Steinemann Technology AG, St. Gallen/Switzerland, has acquired SPS ScreenPrintingSystems GmbH, Wuppertal and Seevetal/Germany, with effect from 1 January 2009. As a result, Steinemann Technology now has a comprehensive portfolio of systems and solutions for finishing print products with varnish. It completely covers all screen printing requirements, from short to long runs – starting with the VITESSA flat screen cylinder presses and culminating in the high-speed rotary flexo and screen printing machine of the HIBIS series. The graphic arts product range of SPS® will be integrated in the Graphic Division of Steinemann Technology, both the SPS® brand name and the machine range being retained. "By incorporating SPS® in our Graphic Division in what is certainly a fairly difficult market environment at the moment, we have taken a major step towards putting our company's positive development on an even broader footing. We are now the only manufacturer in the world in a position to offer its customers systems and solutions to meet all screen printing requirements from a single source – in terms of both printing formats and printing speed. Moreover, our company only recently equipped itself for the future in the extremely exciting market of special-purpose screen printing applications by acquiring Fleischle Siebdruckmaschinen and subsequently establishing Steinemann Coating GmbH," says Jürg Spittler, Vice President of Steinemann Technology AG and Director of the Graphic Division, welcoming the integration of SPS®. "With its sales and service structure, Steinemann Technology is in an excellent position worldwide and characterised by great innovative capacity. The product portfolios and distribution channels of Steinemann Technology and SPS® complement each other perfectly. In the long term, taking this step will enable Steinemann Technology to strengthen the further development of its business segments and consolidate their market position. This is definitely a case of one and one making more than two," says Axel Kaiser, Managing Partner of SPS ScreenPrintingSystems GmbH. The origins of the SPS® brand date back to the company's founding in 1953. After 1957, the company rapidly made a worldwide name for itself by introducing the original SPS® STOP Cylinder Principle™, which combines particular accuracy and speed. Since then, SPS® has time and again launched trendsetting innovations on the market, setting standards in screen printing for both graphic arts and industrial applications. Sandler installs HIBIS 104 high-end rotary flexo and screen printing
Sandler installs HIBIS 104 high-end rotary flexo and screen printing machine from Steinemann Technology
Total flexibility and top quality in finishing print products with special effects / Separate machine for high-end finishing frees up press capacities for printing / HIBIS 104 running at almost full capacity just a few weeks after installation. Johann Sandler GesmbH & Co KG, based in Marbach/Austria, installed a high-speed rotary flexo and screen printing machine from Steinemann Technology AG of St. Gallen/Switzerland at the beginning of October 2008. The printing company has a very good reputation in the Austrian print and media market and, by taking this step, has now effectively positioned itself at the top in the high-end finishing segment as well. Sandler had spent a good two years intensively examining the question as to the approach the company should take in print finishing, and it had soon become apparent that installing a machine exclusively for finishing was the optimum solution. In the past, finishing was handled by an offset printing press equipped for mixed operation. "Mixed operation of conventional and UV systems is neither one thing nor the other. If you work like that, you have to accept sacrifices on either cost-efficiency or quality," says junior boss Hannes Sandler, explaining the reason behind the decision to invest in a separate machine specifically for high-end finishing. Just a few weeks after installation, he can already see that this investment was the right choice. As a result, Sandler today manages with two high-speed printing presses and has greater overall capacity thanks to the additional screen and flexo printing machine. Moreover, the capacity of the HIBIS 104 is already being utilised to a very high degree. New Webline magazine from PrintCity Alliance

WEILBURGER Graphics starts on-line coatings community
"The way people communicate and exchange information and experiences has undergone major change in recent years. Customers and interested parties now require to be served and kept informed in a way that is different to three or four years ago. More and more, they are quitting the passive role which seemed to have been assigned to them permanently and playing an active role in product development and analysis. We don't want to miss out on exploiting this desire on the part of customers, interested parties, suppliers and retailers to work together with us consciously, not only on our product range but also on the company's marketing and sales targets", says Günter Korbacher, executive director of WEILBURGER Graphics GmbH, adding: "A company operating globally can no longer afford to neglect the wide-ranging opportunities which exist today thanks to the worldwide proliferation and public acceptance of the Internet, which is growing continuously. The best things about the active involvement of this sector in corporate communication are the uninterrupted availability of the medium and the direct flow of information between all the communication partners. We shall be able to shift large areas of our support and customer relationship management to this medium and even initiate the development of new products by evaluating customers' wishes. Our customers will get the chance to exchange experiences and knowledge within the expert community and also be able to avail themselves of the platform to offer services of their own within that community. After a start-up phase, even for retailers, suppliers and journalists, the community is sure to represent an ideal analysis instrument with which market tendencies and requirements can be rendered visible at a very early stage." The involvement of the on-line community and the general re-launch of WEILBURGER Graphics' website, which has just been accomplished, have proceeded hand in hand. Here too, the company has invested in a modern Internet presence, extending its former website to form a complex portal system intended, in future, to take care of almost all the functions of WEILBURGER Graphics' customer and document management. "We cannot halt this development. Anyone today who still views the Internet as a threat to the printing sector is going to be on the losing side from the very beginning. We're investing here in the intelligent integration of this medium in our communications management and we shall try to do justice to our traditional role as trendsetters for the benefit of everyone in the sector", says Günter Korbacher in conclusion. The company's new Internet portal can be accessed via the domain www.weilburger-graphics.de, which has been up and running for several years and is currently on line in German and English. Other languages available will soon include Polish and Spanish, and Chinese will follow at the beginning of 2009. The on-line community is currently in its beta test phase and can be accessed directly via the portal. It goes without saying that registration is free. The company invites all users, customers, scientists, journalists, suppliers, students and other interested parties to become active members of this community and thus help bring it to life.
